About Iota phi theta
Iota Phi Theta® Fraternity, Incorporated
On September 19, 1963, at Morgan State College (now Morgan State University), 12 visionary students came together to found Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated®. Their goal was clear: to create a brotherhood rooted in the principles of Scholarship, Leadership, Citizenship, Fidelity, and Brotherhood among men. Since that pivotal day, Iota Phi Theta has not only grown in numbers but also in influence, embodying the ideals set forth by its founders.
As the fraternity continues to expand and evolve, it remains steadfast in its commitment to making meaningful contributions to society, with a special focus on uplifting the African-American community. Iota Phi Theta® is recognized across America for its excellence in all endeavors, serving as a beacon of integrity, dedication, and progress. The fraternity proudly upholds its founders’ vision, continually “Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One,” ensuring that the legacy of those 12 men lives on through each new generation of Iota Men.
On November 12, 1996, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated®, achieved a significant milestone by joining the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). This pivotal moment transformed what was once known as the Elite 8 into the Divine 9 (D9), solidifying Iota Phi Theta’s place among the most esteemed Black Greek-Letter Organizations. By becoming the youngest member of the NPHC, Iota Phi Theta® brought a fresh perspective and renewed energy to the council, further enriching the shared mission of fostering unity, scholarship, and service within the African-American community. This inclusion marked not just an expansion of the council but a reinforcement of the values that all D9 organizations hold dear, ensuring that Iota’s commitment to excellence and social impact would continue to resonate on a national scale.
